The inflated budgets that focus on graphics and "bigger must be better" worlds aren't helping, I agree. Actually, that might have a good amount to do with it as I'm not too fond of open world design.

That's not to say that all we get now is garbage; far from it. 2017 brought with it arguably the best game ever made.

But I do think game design peaked a while ago.

As I said in the post above, I think open world design has a lot to do with it. The lack of focus on having a strong environment with interesting level design has hurt. At least for me, I'd rather a game have a strong core over a big open area with less direction. The sacrifice in design gives the player freedom but the trade off is too much. I guess it just isn't my style.
