For a racing game to implement real damage would make the cars completely useless in a game. Arcade damage (or Nascar damage as I like to call it) is another thing all together. Nascars glance each other and the whole fender flies off. If it were a stock car (like those used in GT) the car would either flip, bend a tie rod, rim, blow a tire or one of many other things that would make the car unfit to continue.
