I thought the Witcher 3 did a good job of it because of all the interesting sidequests and exploration. 

You mean all the excesive sidequests, exploration and roaming that if streamlined could make you finish the game in 30h and only doing over 200h if you want to do sidequest like FF or other JRPGs where you can do "linear" playthrough and finish the game with levels won without sidequests? I just abhorr excessively lenght games and open world useless chores... I don't like to do chores even at work, much less at a game, fetching things up and down.
