Yeah, I would be really happy if Splatoon 2 were Splatoon 1. It would be a fantastic new IP.

I just had lofty expectations of what the sequel would be, and when your expectations are sky-high, it just didn't do enough to live up to the tremendous hype. An iterative sequel took me by surprise....Splatoon was SO innovative and SO fresh that I guess I expected them to keep pushing the bar instead of settling into complacency.

You were foolish to set your expectations high like that, then. It was clear from the very first moment that this was going to be only an iterative sequel, so much so that at first people didn't even know if it was an enhanced port or a new game. That was also clear just from the development time, as it was about the same as the first game in that regard (somewhere around 2 years), which was already an indicator that it wouldn't be that ambitious.

That said, I think we can all have hopes that the eventual Splatoon 3 will be the one to really blow our minds, since it'll probably only come out on Nintendo's next system, which means it might have quite a long development time.

I knew about the multiplayer and how that was a bit iterative, but I thought there would be more surprises when it launched.

Like, SURPRISE! The single player is now much more robust. Or SURPRISE! There were hidden modes that we didn't reveal!

When I popped in the cartridge and there weren't really any surprises at all...that's when everything sort of deflated.

The situation with Splatoon 2 is actually eerily reminiscent of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was SUCH a Melee fanatic back in the day (played it for thousands of hours) that I actually camped out for Brawl and I thought it would be the next coming of Jesus.
