Sure, the site slowed down considerably, but it was a welcome relief.

Relief to you, not to others, and gaming discussion stalled. That's the point.  Of course lots of people hated the threads, many others loved them.  Curbing creation of threads in a forum is stupid, with the exception of duplicate topics.
