Microsofts minimalist style was inspired by Apple. Instead of using more shapely minimalist forms micorsoft uses boxes.They try to liken themselves to their closets competiton. It's the same way they are trying to replicate apples trchnological synergy between products into a lifestyle product.

What are you basing this statement on? Their current logos? Because Microsoft has been using flat, minimalist software design well before it was adopted in iOS 7, for example.
