It is still more than 3 months before the X1X comes out.

They're justifiably worried now that both Sony and Nintendo have consoles that are selling significantly more than the Xbox One. The free games do work, considering how the XOne bundle jumped up to 42, but they're really just treating the symptoms of being a less desirable product at this point.

But long term, do they REALLY work?  Remember when fire sales with two games put it in the top 10?  Then it was 3 games in the top 15.  Now it has fallen to 4 games in the top *50*.  Now in order to get to the top 10 or even 15 for brief spans without a massive new release is to toss in 3 or 4 large games WITH a price cut on top of the $40 off the console is already listed at.  These firesales are short term gains at the cost of long term brand devaluation
