Nah, why the effort? Prove they're guilty, slam the hammer, bring them into the back room and bullet in the head. Every second or cent we spend on sociopaths is wasted.

Well if we are intending to use the death penalty as a deterrent we might as well go all out and make it as excruciating as possible. A bullet to the head is the easy way out. In the United States death penalty cases tend to be more expensive than life-sentences because of the necessary appeals process. When we put somebody to death we need to put in the extra effort to make sure they are guilty of their crime, because we can't bring people back to life if they are found to be innocent, while we can send somebody with a life sentence free if the same were to happen.
