I actually think they should have renamed it. It will sell far better then the mario rpgs, if it's marketed as a sidescrolling action game. If people identify as following the in the footsteps of the New Super Mario Bros. it should do really well. REmember alot of casual gamerrs like the side scrolling title, and is part of the reason it sold so well on the DS, if Super Paper Mario properly hightlights the action of this game in ads, it should hugely appeal to the market that bought a Wii. Remember this title is very different then the older titles. They say the old ones were 80% rpg 20% Action, this one is the exact opposite, which is what people want to see. BTW anyone watch the GDC videos of this game? It looks like it's going to be great. I can't wait to play as bowser either. It's funny you have this state of the art show about the future of games and so far two of the thing I found most exciting were sidescrollers(this game and Little Big planet.) Don't get me wrong it's not the only thing that I found exciting it's just interesting to see this old worn gaming design still trucking along.
