Same reson MMOs will do scheduled events.  It encourages ACTIVE engagement rather than passive.  They want you constantly checking in for events and modes and maps.  The more you check in, the more consistently you will play and engage with the game.  That's the concept.  It keeps the game in the front of your mind is the idea. 

........ The more I check in and its not available the more likely I am to stop checking in or even turning the game on
