I'm no expert, but from what I understand, Power Rangers in North America was cobbled together using action scenes from a Japanese show not called Power Rangers, mixed with the stuff shot in the U.S. using english speaking actors. So it's not really even from Japan in that sense.

Power Rangers was a phenomenon back in the early 90s with its cheesy dialogue, likeable characters, and cool action scenes. It slowed down overtime as new seasons came about after Mighty Morphin. In Japan, it has somewhat of a following. Heck a few of the Super Sentai (which is where footage of Power Rangers came from) met with some of the PR alumni. Still, in Japan, Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Metal Heroes reign.
