I don't really get all the conspiracies about shiites and sunnites and Saudis. From my point of view Iran managed quite well to isolate itself by having extreme fundamentalists at their top.

I do agree that It's never truly about religion, that's just what the monarchs feed their people. I don't know the real reasons behind Obama's pivot towards Iran as well, but it will be interesting to watch.
