Nice, I think she's a pretty decent actress and I can't wait to see what she can bring to the Doctor character. It'd interesting to see the first female in the role. What a pressure for her, Internet is already exploding with these news.
If someone hasn't been following the show recently, it was well established, and it's not canon-breaking that the Doctor could be a female, just saying. So, let her do her best, and see if she can deliver.
But what a hard job after the fantastic take that Capaldi made of the character, bringing again that classic, "alien" feeling after the humanized take on the Character by Eccleston, Tennant and Smith. The character was explored in several ways in the last three seasons, from the "good man" arch of season 8, to the "broken hero" in season 9, and more recently, his willingness to let go everything and stop regenerating. Season 8 was a bit uneven though, and the arc resolution was far from stellar, but series 9 was, arguably, the best DW season. Except for one episode, the rest of them were really excellent.
Heaven Sent remains as my favourite DW episode, and Capaldi skills in that episode, just, maaaaan... The wall-punching scene was the most emotional the show has got imho. His speech in The Zygon Inversion? I cried during that speech. The way he delivered it was fantastic. The 4th-wall breaking in Under the Lake. The wonderful take on inmortality in The Girl Who Died/The Woman Who Lived. Well, that was THE season. Bloody brilliant.
Season 10 was decent, it hasn't got a single episode I dislike, but it was weaker than the previous one. Still, the finale was astonishing. And Capaldi shines in that episode, again. DW best moments are... the quiet ones. And he surely knows how to act. Congrats to Pearl Mackie too because she was probably the best companion since Donna. Just an earthy girl, without any plot device to keep her character going (Clara, Amy, I'm looking at you! XD).
Oh, I'll miss him a lot. And what about the, imho, best DW showrunner since Hinchcliffe? Thanks for everything you did for this show, Moffat. I feel like the man is controversial, to say the least, but, well, I can probably say that the best modern run episodes were his doing. Blink. Girl in the Fireplace. World Enough and Time. Heaven Sent. The Day of the Doctor. Extremis. Listen. What the hell, I can't understand why is he constantly bashed. Let's hope that Chibnal could bring all of the fandom together again though, and everyone can enjoy the show from now on. Exciting times.
