I think Splatoon 2 has more than enough, though, to be deemed a true sequel. Salmon Run, Legend Mode, new weapons, new stages, new merch, and a continuing story from the first game. Of course add on LAN options, improved online and local multiplayer options, can make it more of an enhanced update sequel, but nevertheless, it's still a true sequel in its own right. It's not necessarily from Smash 64 to Melee, but I'd argue it's not just a simple update since you couldn't do some of these options on Wii U due to utilizing the game pad, which sorta limited local multiplayer among other things and the recent direct, and even the previous ones, showed there are new gameplay options to make the game a sequel and not just an enhanced port like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. |
Yeah I definitely wouldn't call it an "enhanced port" like MK8D, but I still think it is more Splatoon 1.5 than Splatoon 2. I'm sure there woud have been much more dev time for it and some true evolutions of the formula had it not been for the fact that they needed the game out when they did for the aforementioned reasons.
