I don't see it becoming mainstream if ever. Most people out there aren't interested in VR, we've seen it over the decades and it ends up becoming a gimmick or short fad.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
