If you're talking specifically about your Breath of the Wild experience, yeah, the control scheme is very confusing in that game.
But in general, controllers have the right amount of buttons that are placed strategically so it becomes intuitive to use them.
Best way to get the better cognitive response from a gamer is to not modify standard set-up control schemes. For example, the jump button in BotW is now X instead of the standard A used in Mario games, which makes it a hella difficult to relearn. Same goes for the dash button B which was accomplished by pressing Y before. That's probably why you're having a hard time figuring that out.
