It's a fascinating topic to me, because I'm at the opposite extreme:  I'm ridiculously empathetic to the point where some people think I can read minds.  I can't, but I'm almost too aware of subtle clues to the point I can get uneasy from minor changes in tone or expression.  I've played poker once...and won the pot. That said,I wasn't always like this.  I was very slow to mature, and into my early 20s I was in a bit of a child like bubble in some ways, especially with women. My social awareness has grown exponentially ever since to the point where I find it very easy to master a crowd if I put my mind to it.

Just curious, but are you autistic? Regardless of whether you are or not, great social skills are always nice to have.

No, not at all. I've just always been quite youthful. Both physically and mentally, most people would guess I was about 10 years younger than I am. So in my teens I was quite oblivious to a lot of social cues, especially with dating.  As I got older it was like an awakening, being able to see things I couldn't see before.
