On it's own merits the X1 turned out to be (as far as we know) a moderate financial success with a great games catalogue although maybe a bit short of blockbuster exclusives. It's pretty certain that it will reach 50m+ sales, which is by no means bad.

Yet there is a big feeling of "what could have been" here with MS coming out of 7th gen looking the strongest of the 3 established console makers. A straight successor to the 360 with the same capabilities and the same price as the PS4 aswell as 360 BC out of the gate should have easily held on to the US/UK markets and made further inroads into continental europe netting MS the #1 spot and a great position for the future.

Atleast MS has invested a lot in BC later on - I think for next gen BC will prove very important as consumers are more used to migrate their digital possesions onto a new device than ever before and Sony not realizing this shift in mindset could make them vulnerable/open another chance for MS.
