As for Skip Beat, I haven't read that one before, though I've heard it's quite good. I remember seeing it a lot in stores back in the day, but I never picked it up. I'll need to change that some time.

Skip Beat is really amazing.  It's one where the writer does a fantastic job of making you want to support the main character because she tries so hard despite running into so many set-backs.  It can also be flat-out hilarious.  Both the manga and the anime are excellent.  However, the art in the manga is never very good--or, rather, it's very old-style shoujo.  Especially at the beginning, it starts out rather amateurish (which is actually kind of common with older works).

I also stopped reading it around chapter 150 or so.  That's when it started to really center on the romantic interest.  Now, that's not that bad on the surface but the guy is just ... he's like you took the ideal image of a hunk from 1,000 fan-girls and made him into a single character.  He's super-talented, rich, successful, tall, handsome, thoughtful, aaand he's like one of the best fighters in the world with a troubled past that still haunts him to this day.  Blah.  He's fine as a supporting character and even an adversary in the first part of the manga but then he's just too perfect as a focus character for me to have any caring or empathy about.

I can see what you mean wih the early artwork. It looks good, but it seems off in some parts, like paneling is weird and some pages just feel too empty with the backgrounds. The artwork seems fun though. I'm not really a fan of shojo style, but this looks like something I can try, once I finish other recs, haha...
