Generations are split by people to categorize them to make things easier
I don't know whether or not the Switch is Gen 8, 8.5 or 9 but I don't think it matters too much. That said, Generations will continue to be used and I'm fine with that. When the PS5 launches, that would be the start of Gen 9 so if Nintendo releases a new console by then, the Switch would probably be considered Gen 8
