Whether or not they DO keep the 3DS line alive is immaterial.

What MATTERS, is that the entire point of the Switch gimmick, becomes a pointless and expensive garnish, if they're NOT going to go the full mile and treat the system like their home console AND portable, all in one. The mind-numbing arguments people put forth as to WHY 3DS should keep going, really don't matter. What DOES matter, is that OK, if you're going to keep your portable line going, then having Switch functionally be a PORTABLE console as well, is now utterly pointless. It's a frivolous gimmick that actually holds the system hardware back. They could have easily spent the money that they did on the "Hybrid" nature of the system, not to mention the needless bells and whistles like "HD Rumble", and made the console ITSELF more powerful, a more powerful HOME unit, more "future-proofed" versus the competition.

The Switch's power level matters LESS, if it is the HYBRID that it was obviously intended to be. IF it was treated like the ONE Nintendo system on the market, where gamers went for ALL of their Nintendo gaming, home OR portable, then that power, as a PORTABLE, is suddenly impressive, and it makes more sense, because the system acts as a bridge between both. If the 3DS line is just going to keep going, that suddenly becomes a "nice but unnecessary" gimmick, and you're left with a home system with pointlessly weak hardware, in comparison to PS4 and Xbox One, let alone PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

It isn't ALL about power, no. But when you stop to consider the fact that, at the end of the day, Switch hardware is probably not capable of producing graphics and game experiences ALL that much more advanced that Wii U, you start to realize how this is all kind of a "HUH"? Move on Nintendo's part. Me personally, I LIKED the idea of it being a TRUE Hybrid. I LIKED the idea of all the games you would usually find on Wii U and 3DS, now being on ONE "Unified Platform" (their own words). That alone held a lot of appeal to me, in addition to it being a "home system you can take on the go". But if 3DS is going to keep going, and going to keep having it's own exclusive games, it makes Switch start to feel like less of a brilliant idea, and at least a BIT more of a gimmick that is going to wear thin over time.
