Your "rights" are dictated by the law. The Unions do not control the law and cannot act outside the law. What the Unions can do is provide the employee with legal help if and when they have an issue as well as fight for all union employees to have the same equal pay, seniority based system and medical benefits. This all of course comes at a cost to both employee and company. The employees however can fight for the same rights without the union and during the hiring process can negotiate salary and benefits.
