I would say the 7th gen was the most successful console gaming generation. And the reason for that is because there were 3 home consoles and 2 handheld consoles that all sold well and thus could support decent game sales across a wide variety of games.
I wonder if we'll ever see its like again. Switch is great, but amalgamating Nintendo's player base onto one platform is not going to see it return to the glory days of the 7th gen where it sold 250 million+ hardware units. PS4 is doing great and PS2 was great. But in the 7th gen Sony sold more hardware units (PS3+PSP) than either the 6th gen did or the 8th gen will.
And we all know the Xbox story. Meh-->Great!-->OK so far.
