It's already surpassed Xenoblade 1 in my view, so Xenoblade 2 is going to have quite the work cut out for it.

That's a low bar you're using XD the Xenoblade games aren't even that good. The only reason they're even being given attention is because it's Nintendo's only RPG series behind friggin' Pokemon. If it was "Tales of" swapped with Xenoblade, Nintendo's fanbase would be clamoring Tales of Berseria as GOTY, hell prob even GOAT material...

Persona 5 deserves recognition, it's a beautifully made game, but unfortunately Atlus will probably have to wait until Persona 6. The series is growing a lot with each iteration, at least. And it will earn some GOTY rewards.

I haven't played Bersia yet, but not even Symphonia competes with XBC. Xenoblade has a huge detailed open world that is more than just a field between towns. The combat is dynamic, and most characters can be specced out to two different party roles. Tank Riki is fun as hell. Xenoblade is chock full of side quests, areas that beg to be explored, and secret boss monsters to take down. The story and theme of living on giants is unique and interesting.

IMO Persona and XBC are both good series. Just as good as one another, and both deserving ot GotY.

Edit: How the heck do you think the battle system is clunky? You perform arts on the opponent by attacking from the right direction, and use combos to topple them. As you do this you slowly build up a super meter. Then you're allowed to use all your party members at once to do one massive epic attack in slow motion. That's the opposite of clunky. It has a ton in common with Mass Effect 2's battle system. Maybe try changing your party AI so that they don't automatically perform arts?
