It's a great Architecture. I personally think it's down to fabrication. Intel has such a big advantage being on a proper 14nm process... Basically once you hit 4ghz you hit the power wall where you need a massive 1.4-1.45v. Sadly that also accellerates the affects of electromigration.

I think once Zen+ hits we might see some better clock scaling and is IMHO when Ryzen will truly start to come into it's own.


GloFo has announced that their 7nm process in now available, with production available in the first half of 2018, and volume production in the second half of the same year:
