Ten to fifteen years ago sales data wasn't very accessible, and vgcharts.org (as I recall it was back in the day) came out of nowhere with sales data for all regions. It seemed very legit to me at the time, and I was under the impression that they had ins with big US retailers, etcetera. How else were they getting their numbers?
Prior to this, I was a member of a site called PC vs Console which posted weekly Media Create numbers for Japan, weekly numbers from some other source for Great Britain, and monthly NPD data for North America.
After discovering VGC, I was always a lurker who used the site primarily for sales data. Since then I've managed to finish school, settle down as a web developer in Chicago-land, get married, and I now have a three year old daughter. I still follow sales data, but I couldn't tell you which day of the week the numbers are going to be posted.
