Yeah, but the rest of the rumor has come true. I don't see any reason not to believe in the remaining portions (unless something changed since.)

There will probably be a Monster Hunter Portable for Switch, and it will sell a lot in Japan, but won't be localized, despite the moderate success of the 3DS games in the West.

Monster Hunter World probably won't sell all that much in Japan, and I am skeptical that it will be a big hit in the West unless they work their asses off to make it a polished and seamless experience For the type of game they are trying to make here there is strong competition, and I am just not seeing it from the trailer, but I am a bit down on the game like the rest of the MH fanabase, so who knows.

If this fails though, Capcom is in big trouble and will likely try to get Monster Hunter Portable out ASAP to recoup costs. Even that, might not be enough though.

You should also consider the fact that home console games commonly retail for 50% more than handheld games. This can go a long way in recuperating extra development costs, and once you cross a certain sales barrier, will even give you extra profits.

But they also cost more to develop if attempting to compete with AAA titles (which is what Capcom must do to be relevant in the West on home consoles/PC's.) Any gains from retail price, likely will be eaten up by development costs. The game probably would've retained an AA budget expectation on Switch where the competition isn't so AAA dependent. If Capcom tries to make an AAA game on an AA budget they are going to fail to get the Western sales growth they hope for.

One other thing to consider is that Nintendo heavily subsidized marketing and localization costs for the 3DS titles. Sony might be doing something similar, but it remains to be seen, especially when we consider that it is a multiplat.
