Yes, it's petty, but no, I'm not surprised.

That's not true actually. The Japanese aren't much different from us Americans. I see this a lot and i'm not sure why. A lot of people tend to make assumptions of the Japanese, that end up being false.

I don't think you've ever been to Japan if you think they're like Americans.
