Ah, the ol' "this sounds vaguely logical but is clearly not the actual reason" PR response.
Sony need to be transparent about the specifics of their cross-play policies. As it stands they're being pretty confusing. No cross-play at all for MC, but Rocket League is fine with PC. Then with FF14 they're open to cross-play with everyone, but MS seemingly aren't. It's a bit of a mess.
