As a framerate aficionado is 240Hz over 144Hz a useful jump? It sounds to me like wasted performance for extremely minimal gain.

Sure is. Especially if you have the hardware to push it.
I used to have a 240hz CRT monitor back in the 90's. And it was amazing.

I mean, it's not the same kind of "wtf" kind of jump you get from 60 to 120hz where you might spend an hour moving your mouse cursor and windows around due to how smooth everything looks... But it's still significant.

Which would be better suited?. Bear in mind I am aiming for a 1080p one, with a 1440p as a backup choice.

What is your budget though?

I forgot to mention about the colour banding issue I have with my current monitor, i'd love to avoid other monitors with said issue.

Then you probably wish to have a 10-bit panel rather than 6/8-bit. What current monitor do you have?

I know what you mean though. I have an LG 27" 1080P E-IPS display on my core 2 rig... Being only a $300 AUD monitor, it's only got a 6-bit panel and colour banding is prevelent.
