It was the best of the conferences for me, but I suppose that isn't saying much. 2017 is a very in-between year for gaming. Lots of projects in development slated for 2018, and other projects too early in development to really give showtime at the moment that are likely to be announced either at PSX or E3 2018 for a 2019 release window.
Where Sony went right was that this was about the games. They spent an hour before talking about smaller announcements like the Knack 2 release date, Matterfall release date, Everybody's Golf, R&D chat, and where Sony is now with Playstation and its products. The actual press conference was a good run of trailers. They didn't spend time fluffing out the run time with lots of talking that is fairly unnecessary with a good trailer in place. There wasn't a lot new, but I appreciate the focus on VR without a terrible gimmicky display to show what we were getting. Lots of detail expansion on things we have had scant details on like Uncharted: Lost Legacy and God of War.
As well, we got our first look at Horizon DLC, a new Monster Hunter hitting Playstation for the first time in too long, a good look at what Detroit has become since the first trailer that had an android detective trying to talk down a suspect, a SotC remaster/borderline remake, and more. Let's not forget that stellar Days Gone gameplay trailer.
All in all, this was an excellent followup to much of what was just bare bone announcements at E3 2016. Seeing the promised Spiderman gameplay reveal was a solid finale, and 2018 is already looking strong after what has already been a stellar 2017.
I'd say this was a quality 8/10. It would be higher if more of the big exclusives were coming a touch sooner, but honestly, crowding 2017 any further would be a bit shortsighted. It's a valid play of the long game for release scheduling, and now I know there is a lot left for 2017 and several big hitters that will make 2018 a good year.
Now we just get to see what they have to bring at PSX, since they have started holding back at E3 to get what may be seen as smaller announcements and further out release announcements for that December conference.
