Microsoft as a whole? I don't think they'll give up anytime soon, not as long as Windows is as big for gaming as it is today. The future of Xbox might be uncertain though but it's still a powerful brand so it wouldn't make any sense to just put it under the axe. Even if MS stops making their own consoles they'd probably keep the Xbox brand.

When I say "given up" I think.... trying to really push sales, for this generation.

I dont think MS will drop out as long as they see profit in staying around.

Its like after they stumbled out the gate, they decided to cut back on costs for xbox.

Maybe next gen, with Xbox Two, they ll dedicate more to trying again.

I think they'll prioritise working on the next stage of Xbox over trying to rejuvenate the Xbone. So in that sense I suppose one could say they've given up, in the same way Nintendo "gave up" on Wii U by not cutting price and really putting an effort in for increasing HW sales. On the other hand they are releasing a new Xbone model so I don't know.

As for the next generation I don't see them increasing their investments in consoles. Their focus will be on Xbox as a service more than a brand of consoles.
