Of course I buy a new console primarily to play new games, but they don't necessarily have to be AAA.
Also the importance of backwards compatibility depends on the quality of your retro library, there are some games I'd like to be able to play anytime. Also BC gives you an opportunity to play a game you may have missed some year later. In any case it's a great feature that any console ideally should have.
