I'm going to go with it being the release date. I'm still thinking the price is going to be $449-$499. It may actually be what was recently rumored, $449 for a 500GB model and $499 for a 1TB model. I find it more interesting to see how Sony will answer it. Will they not care as much, and just announce a $50 cut in Sept? Or will they go aggressive and drop it by $100? A $299 Pro would absolutely kill. Probably be every 1 in 4 PS4s sold or even every 1 in 3. And is the rumor that Sony is designing a Pro Slim true, too?

I guess MS didn't like the 4>1 thing some fans used early in the gen, so they went 6>4. Of course, Sony has the numbers that really matter. 100M+  >  <50M.

Sony wont drop the Pro price to $299 this year. It doesnt make sense for them to even if Scorpio sells really well at $399. Only way Sony will do a $299 Pro will be if Xbox starts outselling them which wont happen or if they start losing lots of sales which wont happen this year.

MS better hope they don't, as that would take the wind out of their sails before they even launch.  And it's not impossible.  We have had a rumor about a Pro Slim.  Some were thinking it was about a PS4 Super Slim, but I doubt it.  It would also be Sony's cost cutting coming to fruition.  Lowered cost thanks to no 4K Bluray drive.  Instead of a completely new GPU, they just doubled up on the one they have been ordering for the OG PS4 already.

Now, if the Scorpio is $399, I think Sony may go aggressive.  However, if it is $449+, I doubt they will feel the need to, and just cut it by $50.
