I disagree. If Final Fantasy XV was able to break even with its day 1 shipment, they managed to keep costs low for dev cycle that long. Even if the current state of XV was only worked on for 4 years, they still had the pay the artists and writers for the 6 years before it.

Yes and no , You have people who are paid a yearly salary and are considered staff and then you have a large amount of contractors and sub contractors who only get paid for contracted work , plus even in an industry where complaints about working conditions is common, Japanese studios are notorious especially around crunch time , it's not hard to find pictures of rows of workstations with sleeping bags piled under every single one.
