I only experienced Gen 5 from the PS1 and the GBC but it was a good time overall, both platforms had a huge selection of games to choose from and 3D technology was advancing rather quickly too so it felt like being on the bleeding edge.

Gen 6 overall was great, each platform had something unique to offer and there were so many good games out there. Halo 1 & 2, Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, GTA III & SA, Wind Waker, Pokemon R&S. Online multiplayer on consoles was starting to become more common-place on consoles and the future looked bright.

Gen 7 was both good and bad. Handhelds were the best they've ever been and the PSP was really an amazing device for its time. Consoles saw the rise of online store fronts which saw the rise of things such as the Virtual Console and indies and overall solid lineups. On the other hand, this generation was plagued with hardware issues (failures, long install times, weak hardware) and the death of numerous developers from the jump to HD.

Gen 8 overall I have not liked. I enjoyed the 3DS and Vita tons but the consoles felt overall inferior to their Gen 7 counterparts. Features have been scrapped away (backwards compatibility, media playback, OS features), issues such as game installation has become worse on some platforms and I'm not a fan of the direction some publishers are taking their games. There have been some good games though so it's not all bad.
