Saying that it's left for interpritation is a pretty standard reply in these situations. And this is true for every character. Yosuke may find out later that he also likes guys for all we know. And it's not "their" colective opinion. Nich Maragos, Atlus USA's Persona 4 Editor, who swayed more towards Kanji being gay.
But when talking about the game itself, it didn't suggest he was LGBT.
Every single Shadow only became a Persona after the person accepted the feelings portrayed by their shadow. However, Kanji said "It ain't a matter of guys or chicks. I'm just scared shitless of being rejected." His Shadow would not accept him if he denied the truth. The reason his Shadow appeared this way can be speculated, but most likely it was a combination of how other people treated him due to his feminine hobbies, and because he seemingly "felt something" towards Naoto, who he at the time thought was a guy, which made him more confused about his own feelings.
You can say it's open ended the same way any character's sexuality is. But I don't think anything in P4 suggested he was LGBT.

True.
I based my statements of what I've read and to me, the gamasutra article basically spells it out but I ignored what was presented in the game. It has clues pointing in more directions than just straight tho.
I also put partial blame on Extra Credits for cementing it with a video basically staying that there was no doubt him being gay. In any case, his story makes sense whether he is gay or not. You are not wrong tho.
