Your saying that because its zelda, but zelda isnt as strong as you think as a franchise compared to the west. BotW is doing very well. I think many put it around 400k-500k lifetime in japan before launch. With some optimistic saying 600k+. Here we are with zelda doing 12k+ with hardware being limited almost 3 months after release |
When the 3rd best selling Switch game is 1 2 Switch, then I think Zelda's success in a country that is a bit less enamoured by Zelda historically is as much down to limited choices in good games than necessarily a sudden and unexpected love for Zelda in Japan. It's possible BotW would be selling as historically expected if it was selling into a more fleshed out, varied and better quality game library.
Mediocre games benefit from early gen release by having little competition (Knack on PS4 anyone?). Good games would also benefit.
