It's very pretty but I hope the game-play has evolved to match.  RDR game-play was mediocre at best.

Disappointing, but not surprising. I bet it's going to be damn good and well worth the wait.

Was there any setting quite like the American West? I think similar environments, limited governance and culture/tech clashes existed throughout the Americas, but I can't think of much that would compare in the "Old World".

Maybe Russia's frontier settlements in Siberia? Seems like that would have been far too sparsely populated, though.

It's easy to see why that region and era are still subject to movies and games, it's just so "man against world"y lol, almost seems like a social experiment into near-apocalyptic living.

It's hard to think of situations that contained so many types of conflict on such a large scale.  Rapid expansion of that magnitude creates so much friction that it's almost impossible to control.  I guess that's what is so romantic about it that it keeps getting revisited in media so often.  Even inside that, there are so many themes you can follow, such as law vs anarchy or progress vs tradition.

It's like a fantasy world in terms of fictional potential for strife.

Edit:  Thinking about it, I guess it's kind of like the Warring States periods from both China and Japan, which are revisited so often in fiction.  Though the situations are obviously very different, they all provide similar possibilities for the imagination.
