Well he's German and at least I've heard German public transportation is pretty good. Don't know how true or widespread that is though.

I remember reading that Los Angeles used to have pretty good public transport, but then the big automobile companies lobbied to try to make people buy cars instead. So yeah, maybe the obsession with owning a car here has to do with that.
