I can personally verify that Trump has long been closely connected to a Russian mobster, but that doesn't mean he's connected to the Russian mafia or Putin through that individual. What I have seen is their connection went largely ignored in early 2016 news reports and is gaining traction now. Of most peculiarity is that, despite their very close connection (several photos, offices two floors away in Trump tower, mutual associates, etc.), Trump said, "I don't know the guy, maybe met him once."
