PS4 version is pretty much a full-blown remake in the vein of Resident Evil GC and FFIII/IV DS, save for the simultaneous release. Has anything similar happened before?

Right now I can only think of Ni No Kuni with the DS and PS3 versions, I'm sure the are a few other examples although it's not a common occurance you're right in that the non 3DS version is like a full blown remake.
