Total units sold is not actually the same as installed base but okay.

It's a volatile market. Nintendo is trying something new with a unified design in order to combat a shrinking consumer base. They won't need to get anywhere near those combined numbers but they do need to prove that they're on the right path with better margins and positive signs of brand growth.

Creating new, long-term customers is going to be very key for them. If there are enough people who favor a hybrid design then Nintendo might have found a very viable and sustainable niche. If the Switch shows strong sales over the next two years, I think Nintendo--if they're smart--can throw away the "hit or miss" philosophy of home console design and instead focus on refining and improving the hybrid design.
