This happened to GTA: San Andreas almost three years ago:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=928747

17 songs removed due to... yep, end of licensing rights. And, as this PCGamer article of that time explains, the same happened with Vice City.

Yikes I wasn't aware of this. That's terrible news. Why can't it be like movies where they pay for the rights to use it to include it in their project? I'm pretty sure songs aren't taking out of a films soundtrack 20 years later or even for HD re-releases. This is pretty absurd.

I think it's a mentality problem.

Movies have had more time to face this trouble, probably when VHS tapes came out and movies were not only restricted to the movie theater like before. With videogames, digital distribution does the same thing, expanding the lifespan of videogames almost forever, but video game developers/publishers still haven't fully adjusted to this new reality and still rely on cheaper licensing deals that last years instead of being permanent like with movies.

It will take time, but they'll learn.

Please excuse my bad English.
