I'm certain Nintendo is under-baking these a bit, but not explicitly to create false demand. Reports have it that profit margins per unit are slim. Nintendo is a very conservative company. There was no way they were going to produce enough of these things to have them just sitting on shelves until they burn through the initial run of parts and production costs go down.

Now that it's close to a sure hit they might loosen their wallets a bit, but don't count on Switch overstock this calendar year.
