But where is the lie?

I wouldn't say it's a lie, because it can't be proven that it's more than misinformation.
But it is a contradiction, and someone was likely not truthful.

White House: Trump only fired Comey because of Sessions and Rosenstein's recommendation.
Trump: I would have fired him regardless of what they said.

It sounds like there may be a communication problem between Trump and his staff on their messaging.
And it's especially surprising that after his staff tried to shift the blame from Trump to the other two, because the only other time something like this happened was when Nixon tried to fire the people investigating him, Trump just goes out and admits that it was his idea.

All of Trumps people INCLUDING the Vice President said he was fired based on the AG and AAG's advice.  A sane person would look at that, see a whole potential for corruption given that the AG is under investigation for corruption yet he was part of the process of firing the guy investigating him so SOMEONE higher in Trump's circle said, "LOOK. You just used a bunch of tainted people to justify his firing. You can't DO that Mr President because it's going to look even MORE shady than burning your own Vice President/secretaries who ALL said it was the AG/AAG that made up your mind.

Consequently HIS story and everyone else who spoke from his office ARE ALL DIFFERENT.  This isn't even convoluted. Even if you don't want to take the word of all the other people who are SUPPOSED to be reporting what the President says, The Vice President saying a COMPLETELY different story from the President alone should be liighting congress on frigging FIRE.
