Well, I'd say that hack 'n slash games were never really a huge genre. However, when comparing generations, God of War III I believe is the best-selling GoW game, and according to Capcom themselves DMC4 is the best selling in the franchise. So, I don't exactly see the 6th gen-7th gen decline that you do. Yes, maybe Ninja Gaiden was not as big, but I'd say that it was offput by Bayonetta, which did fairly well.
