Like a lot of things, it's a good system in theory but in practice it turns out that crappy people ruin it.
This is one of the reasons I rarely comment on Reddit--and if I *do* comment, I reply to the mediocre pun or stating-the-obvious response that has the most up-votes, even if my comment has nothing to do with it.
I spend my down-votes on things that should never have been up-voted in the first place. I see myself as the balancing force between chaos and order.
