"Hilo" is more like string I think there isn't a good translation of "thread" to Spanish. I would say "foro" which is just "forum"...

The answer from yahoo is right on referring to thread as "hilo" mainly as the material for sewing, and also depending on the context as "hilo de una conversacion", but in forums that i frequented in spanish we referred to the whole site or "forum" as the "foro" and to is subdivisions as "Topics" in spanish as "temas", if there was another subdivision were users could post their opinions that were referred mostly as "threads", those were called "temas" o "conversaciones". 

En España se usa "hilo" para hacer referencia a las distintas discusiones o temas, así que VGPolyglot no se ha equivocado. ¡No seáis tan quisquillosos!
