Depends how much you want to take care of the cat though. As you say Cats may take less effort, but if its a really hairy cat, it may take more effort then a dog. Or those expensive dog like cats; they are quite interesting.

Honestly, what is a good low maintence cat? I ask mostly cause the cat is more or less going to be a companion to my daschund and keep him company since Im always gone at work (75 on a good week, 85 on a bad one)

Shorthairs are lower maintenance, and smaller cats. So Domestic or American shorthair, which is probably most cats that you see. But they might not like dogs as much as other breeds, but it depends on the individual cat.

And if you still have a puppy, should be fine.
